Finlitics

Good evening dear friends!

We’re still in Finland and guess what, the next couple of days, we will discover the south side of this country with a dog sled. Incredible, right?!

But not only the nature is nice to explore, also the politics of Finland are very interesting. Finland has its own constitution. The constitution of Finland is the supreme source of the national law of Finland. It describes the basis, structures, the fundamental rights of Finnish citizens and so on. It came to force on 1 March 2000, and was amended on 1 March 2012. The president of Finland is the head of state. But his role as head of state is not so important as you could think. Being president is more a ceremonial, non-executive position. The president can be chosen by one or two elections for a term of six years. Each president can rule for maximum 12 years. The current president is Sauli Niinistö. He’s the first president from the National Coalition Party since Juho Kusti Paasikivi who resigned in 1956.

The Parliament of Finland is unicameral. This means that it consists of just one chamber or house. There are 200 members in the Parliament who have supreme legislative authority. Their profession exists of altering the constitution and ordinary laws, dismiss the cabinet and override presidential vetoes. The members of this Parliament are elected for a term of four years. Since 1906, the Parliament has been prevailed by the Centre Party, the National Coalition Party and the Social Democrats.
Generally, after an election, a new cabinet is formed. The parties have to negotiate to form this cabinet. After the discussion, the cabinet has to be approved by a majority vote in the parliament. The cabinet exercises most executive powers. The Prime Minister of Finland is the head of the cabinet. It’s possible that the Chancellor of Justice and other ministers participate in the cabinet.
It is nice to live in Finland. This country has one of the world's most extensive welfare systems. It provides decent living conditions for all residents, even if you are a non-citizen. I could see myself living in Helsinki! It’s like a perfect city.

I hope you liked my blog! Have a nice day guys!

Isabella
