Controversial?

Welcome back friends
As you know by reading our previous blog we are in Belarus. Really, this is already our 9th country. I still can’t believe that we are doing all this. I will never forget the time I’m having here and we only have 3 countries left. I may not think like that. It’s still one month that we will travel so I will enjoy every moment of it, all of us I think.

Let’s have a look at the politics in Belarus. As you might know Belarus is a presidential republic governed by the National Assembly and therefore they have of course a president. Each president gets a term of 5 years. Since 1994 Alexander Lukashenko has been the president of Belarus. In 1996 he wanted to enlarge the presidential term from 5 till 7 years, this was very controversial especially among the public. He got what he wanted and therefore the election of 1999 was pushed back to 2001. ViktarHanchar, who was the chief electoral officer, said that the extension of the term was a fantastic fake and after he said this, he was removed from office during the campaign.
The house of Representatives has the power to appoint the prime minister when he is making constitutional amendments, calling for a vote of confidence and making suggestions on foreign and domestic policy.

The Council of the Republic has the power to select the various government officials, condact an impeachment trial of the president and aspect (or reject) the bills that passes the House of Representatives. Each chamber has the right to veto any law passed by the local officials if it is contrary to the constitution.
The government also consists of a Council of Ministers headed by a prime minister and 5 deputy ministers.

This is some information about the politics of Belarus and the controversial President of Belarus who is nowadays still president.

This is only one part of Belarus but my friends will definitely describe another part of this marvelous country. Thank you for reading my blog and feel free to comment.
